Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand modern OSINT investigations – understand the role of Open Source Intelligence within contemporary investigations and how publicly available information can be collected, assessed and developed into actionable intelligence.

  • Conduct structured online investigations – develop an investigative approach for identifying people, organisations, accounts, locations, events and digital activity across the open internet.

  • Investigate social media effectively – understand the investigative value of major social media platforms and recognise platform-specific behaviours, identifiers, content and relationships that can support an investigation.

  • Use advanced search and discovery techniques – construct more effective searches, pivot between sources and progressively develop an investigation from limited starting information.

  • Understand digital traces – recognise how usernames, email addresses, telephone numbers, imagery, locations, documents and other digital artefacts can create connections between online identities and activity.

  • Use AI as an investigative assistant – apply generative AI and Large Language Models to support research, analysis, summarisation, information extraction, hypothesis development and investigative planning.

  • Write effective AI prompts for investigations – construct prompts that produce reliable, structured and useful investigative outputs rather than relying on generic AI responses.

  • Analyse large quantities of information using AI – use AI to assist with reviewing documents, datasets, online material and unstructured information to identify entities, relationships, timelines, patterns and investigative opportunities.

  • Critically assess AI-generated information – recognise hallucination, bias, incomplete information and other limitations of AI, and understand the importance of corroborating AI-assisted findings against reliable source material.

  • Identify and analyse relationships between entities – develop intelligence around individuals, organisations, usernames, accounts, locations and other entities by identifying connections across multiple open sources.

  • Use imagery and geospatial information within investigations – understand how photographs, mapping, location information and other geographic indicators can contribute to establishing where activity may have taken place.

  • Understand breached and exposed data – recognise the investigative opportunities and significant legal, ethical and data-protection considerations associated with leaked, breached and exposed information.

  • Preserve investigative reasoning and provenance – understand the importance of recording where information originated, how it was discovered and how conclusions were reached so that investigative findings can be reviewed and defended.

  • Apply necessity and proportionality to online activity – recognise when investigative activity may move beyond simple observation of publicly available information and consider the implications of privacy, collateral intrusion and investigative authorities.

  • Understand the legal and ethical environment for digital investigations – consider relevant UK legislation, organisational policy and oversight when conducting online investigative activity, including principles associated with RIPA, the Investigatory Powers Act, data protection and IPCO expectations.

  • Turn OSINT into useful intelligence – move beyond simply finding information by assessing relevance, reliability and intelligence value and presenting findings clearly for operational or investigative use.

  • Use contemporary investigative tools – gain practical experience with a selection of modern OSINT and AI tools rather than relying exclusively on theoretical demonstrations.

  • Use Panacea within an investigation – experience CyberNest Labs' digital investigation platform to support OSINT research, investigative analysis and the organisation of information gathered during practical exercises.

  • Apply learning to realistic investigative scenarios – consolidate the techniques taught during the course through practical exercises designed around real-world investigative problems.

The emphasis throughout is on practical investigation rather than simply demonstrating tools: delegates learn how to combine OSINT methodology, investigative judgement and contemporary AI capabilities to produce intelligence that is useful, explainable and defensible.
